This Module addresses the role of mass media as a social institution in functional democracies and enlightens students about constraints faced by this institution when countries fail to adhere to related standards, thus weakening democracy. The major issues addressed include:The role of government in a democratic society; Media Freedom as a Human Right; Media; the watchdog of a democratic society, Understanding Quasi Democracies; The importance of legal safeguards for journalists; Citizen Journalism as a modern safeguard of democracy; The power of the vernacular media in developing societies; The role of the media in post conflict societies; and Role of print and electronic media in multi ethnic countries
